LIBRARY ASSISTANT II POSITION DESCRIPTION

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director, Public Services Supervisor

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None

 

Under general supervision, the Library Assistant II assists with early literacy and other programming and provides customer service to library patrons. Regular tasks include assisting with early literacy program, creating and maintaining borrower accounts, checking library materials in and out, assisting the public with library services, handling issues related to missing or overdue items, and other related tasks. The Library Assistant II also assists with the maintenance of the library collection including shelving, organizing, and maintaining library materials. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Library experience (preferred)
  • Experience working with Pre-K youth in a classroom setting (1 year minimum)(required)
  • Proficient in the use of computers (required)
  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, and techniques (may be acquired after hire)
  • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification System (may be acquired after hire)
  • Knowledge of popular books, authors, movies, and music
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with a diverse public
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the Director and co-workers
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records and interests
  • Ability to pay attention to detail

 

PUBLIC SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Professionally respond to patron inquiries in person, by phone, or e-mail
  • Assist patrons in locating and selecting library materials and other information
  • Check library materials in and out using the Integrated Library System (ILS)
  • Provide instruction to patrons on the use of library equipment
  • Interpret and explain library policies and procedures
  • Register patrons for library cards
  • Handle financial transactions for patron services and fines/fines
  • Follow library opening and closing procedures for efficient service and building security

 

COLLECTION MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sorts and shelves all types of library materials
  • Shifts materials as needed, maintaining order and appearance
  • Shelf reads collections
  • Develops attractive displays of books and other materials, marketing various areas of the collection
  • Weeds the collection by removing outdated and damaged materials and referring them to the appropriate staff
  • Searches for items on monthly collection maintenance lists

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at staff meetings, training, and other continuing education opportunities
  • Organizes and facilitates library programming, as assigned
  • Adheres, supports, and effectively implements administration and library board policy
  • Understands and upholds the principles of Intellectual Freedom
  • Performs duties associated with the processing of library materials through statewide delivery
  • Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested
  • Physical stamina is required to rearrange furniture for community room and program purposes, to put away materials, and to push and pull loaded book carts up to 125 lbs. and other library equipment and materials. Physical activity includes, but is not limited to, prolonged periods of sitting, as well as periods of standing, mobility, stretching, bending, and stooping.

Pay: $12.00/hour

Required Schedule (15-25 hours):

  • Days, 9:45 am - 3:00 pm 
  • 1 evening a week, 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
  • 1 Saturday/month 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. 
  • Flexibility to cover other shifts, as needed (preferred)
